Fighting depression

Q. Masters, no matter how hard I try to feel good, I always seem to drop into a depression or bout of self loathing. What am I doing wrong?

A. Dear Confused One, your first problem is in your thinking. When you say to us, “no matter how hard I try” you are saying to yourself “I don’t think I can.” When you try to do something that you are not sure is possible, you end up trying, and trying, and trying, until you finally give up. You must change your thinking.

Do you believe that you can feel good? That is the first step necessary to see what it is like to feel good, and ultimately to move into feeling good at will. Once you believe, you must then change your thinking to knowing that you can feel good any time you desire. When you know you can feel good, whenever that sense of depression or self loathing arises, go from thinking to acting. Already knowing it is possible to feel good, concentrate on that feeling and then start feeling good. You will reach a point where you feel good all the time because you do not want to feel any other way.
