Fear for children

QUESTION: Masters, I have anxiety over my kids learning to drive. We live in a high traffic area (Seattle) and share our rainy roads with speeding tanker trucks and drivers on cell phones. We see an accident a month. I feel there is no margin for error since we live on a shoulder-less, hilly, curved road. They took driver’s ed [education] but haven’t put enough time in on the road to pass the driving test. I am too terrified to take them out after too many close calls. I drive them everywhere or they take public transportation. I feel like I am doing a disservice by not pushing them to drive. They are off to college and my husband is fine with them getting their license after college. Can you give my any help or insight? ~Carrie, USA

ANSWER: You are acting the part of the loving overprotective mother. It is very normal in society to want to protect your offspring from any danger coming from without and from within. Children never learn to take responsibility for their actions unless they are given the opportunity, so some decision-making is important. Your children are well grounded in preservation energy; they are not careless.

What we would caution you about is giving them the sense that they have something to fear regardless of their preparation for life. When you fixate on a scenario, the universe says, “Oh, interested in that? Let’s see what we can do to make sure you experience it.” You can call fears into physical being. When a child becomes aware of a parent’s fear, it becomes more real to them and they start to fear it as well and give it even more energy so it just has to appear.

There are many potential dangers in your world: traffic, wild animals, unstable earth, crazy humans—all can be held at bay if you say, and really believe the truth of your statement, “I do not need to experience this!” You don’t have to practice at first on your curvy road. You can give the kids wheel time in parking lots, school yards, city streets, and open highways; then you move up to your road.

The important thing is what they think. Do they feel somewhat deprived because they don’t have a license like their friends? Are they ashamed or embarrassed that their parents have to take them places? Or are they in no hurry to get behind the wheel? Let them make up their own minds. If after college is fine with them, then wait. But don’t let your fears arouse their fears.

Fear controlling life

QUESTION: Masters, I have a very good life, no practical problems. I’m healthy, don’t have money problems, have lovely and happy children and a husband of 15 years who I love and loves me. So why have I been suffering from anxiety, panic attacks and depression for 10 years? Fear blocks me so much that I’m not able to enjoy all the good things. I’ve tried psychoanalysis, yoga, rebirthing, hypnosis and meditation, but nothing seems to work. I have a lot to give, and many talents, but I’m unable to do anything but my everyday chores because of my fears and my overwhelming sense of weakness. I’ve repeatedly asked the masters to tell me what I’m doing wrong. I just can’t find the strength to do anything. Why is it so? What can I do? Why can’t I find a way to express myself and use my talents? ~Chiara, Italy

ANSWER: You are letting your fears control your very existence. They cannot arise and take control unless you allow them to come into your life. Fear is the indication of some lessons your soul wanted you to understand. Instead of working toward understanding, you are running away and accepting that you are unworthy, unable to deal with your situation, and deserving of all the negative feelings besetting your life. Well, you are a perfectly wonderful, all-knowing soul inside, which you don’t allow yourself to see.

The anxiety is fear of being out of control. Ask yourself why you would feel that way when you have the ability to have such a fantastic family which you keep together. When that fear surfaces, go into the feelings and look for the origin. You will find you are carrying uncertainties from your childhood.

The panic attacks come from believing you are going to get caught by others as not being who they think you are. You have accepted as a reality hurtful comments made to you throughout your life. They can continue to hurt you only if you believe they are true. Look at the love you have given to others that has kept them in harmony with their life. Concentrate that within yourself and feel the real you. Love yourself as you love others.

Depression is a lack of having any impression of who you are. It creates a void in your life and is easy to fill up. If you don’t fill it yourself, others will be happy to contribute and you won’t be happy with their ideas. Create how you wish to be. Take all those talents and abilities and identify with them. You have them, but you don’t see them as defining who you are. Change that and become who you want.

Your first step should be to banish all the negativity whether it be fear, anxiety, panic, or depression. When any of these come into your awareness, immediately bring to mind your most wonderful accomplishment. When you are feeling afraid, put yourself into a safe, beautiful place filled with unconditional love. When you are depleted of energy, use your intention to pull in the universal energy that surrounds you.

You have very strong belief systems by which you judge everything that happens to you. None of your previous attempts have been successful because the beliefs in place tell you they won’t work. You have the ability to change every aspect of your life. Throw out these limiting beliefs and see yourself as powerful. As you rid each difficulty of control over you, accept that you can change, then believe it will change, and start living your new life.

Accepting fear

QUESTION: Masters, I have been on a spiritual path and recently the negative feelings that have been surfacing have been overwhelming. I have become aware of my issues which seem to be plentiful. Am I over-thinking and missing the big picture? What is a good way to face and dissipate all the negative feelings that I have suppressed? At times I also feel a deep sense of fear within. Where does this feeling come from? And what feelings/issues caused the blockage in my right hip area? I also have these weird dreams on and off where something is trying to pull me out of my body or I scream trying to move my body. What are these dreams about? ~KL, Hong Kong

ANSWER: Stop thinking so much! You are concentrating on these conditions you have become aware of and have given them strength to take charge. You are accepting that nothing can be done to control them. Rely on your spiritual training. The first step to spiritual growth is getting rid of judgment. You can’t be uncomfortable unless you accept the cause. You can’t be full of negativity unless you accept it and think you can’t do anything about it.

Fear is a sign you are confronting a life lesson. It is normal. It is neither right nor wrong; accept that and you will be getting rid of judgment. You need to go into the feeling that comes with the fear and ask, “Why am I feeling this way? Where does it originate?” If you judge that it is wrong, you will run away from it and it will intensify. Instead, see that there is another way to look at it; you can see it as a lesson to learn from and then banish. Any time negative thoughts or feelings arise, decide how you want to feel, and then picture yourself in that energy.

The blockages within your body are issues you are failing to face. Ignoring a problem does not make it go away. Just like the fears, you have to go after the cause. Meditate and ask your body what you are missing. Your dreams are trying to tell you to become active in your own spiritual life. Learn the lessons, go to the positive, send the negative away.
